Before Covid-19, the global travel and tourism sector grew at 3.9% outpacing the global economy growth of 2.5% for the ninth consecutive year. The sector contributed approximately US$8.9 trillion which represents 10.3% of global GDP in 2019 and one in 10 jobs (330 million) around the world.
The Covid-19 has brought the global economy and the travel and tourism sector to a standstill with unprecedented impact on society at large. It has destroyed economies leading to an economic and humanitarian crisis on a scale not faced since the Second World War. Over the past two months millions of people have lived with lockdown and while some countries have been able to contain the spread of the virus, others are still fighting to control it. The vast majority of businesses globally that depend on tourism and travel are desperate to reopen and begin operating under the “new normal”.
